Dr. Oury is a member of the Division of Molecular Genomic Pathology.
Dr. Oury is co-director of a program designed to transition physician scientist trainees into academic faculty professorships. This combined Residency-Post-doctoral Research Fellowship or combined Residency-PhD program is designed to develop Academic Pathologists to become independent Principal Investigators and to play a leading role in combined research and diagnostic careers.

Research ExpertiseDr. Oury's laboratory is investigating the role of reactive oxygen species in pulmonary disease and innate immunity. His laboratory is particularly focused on how oxidative modification of components of the extracellular matrix contribute to inflammatory responses and pulmonary fibrosis and how the enzyme extracellular superoxide dismutase (EC-SOD) modulates these responses.
In addition, recent studies from the laboratory of Dr. Oury found that EC-SOD plays an important role in innate immunity. The laboratory found that EC-SOD located in granules within phagocytic inflammatory cells is essential for bacterial phagocytosis. The laboratory is now investigating mechanisms in which EC-SOD is regulating bacterial phagocytosis and if EC-SOD may be useful as an adjuvant therapy for treating bacterial infections such as pneumonia.
Finally, Dr. Oury is investigating a novel role for the receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE) in interstitial lung disease and asthma. Findings suggest that RAGE is very important in the pathogenesis of asthma and that blocking RAGE signaling with a soluble decoy receptor sRAGE can protect against allergic airway inflammation.
