Consultation Services in Pediatric Pathology

Scope of Services

The Division of Pediatric Pathology, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center offers a comprehensive consultation service in the pathology of enteric nervous systems disorders such as Hirschsprung disease, hepatic and solid organ transplantation, pediatric soft tissue and visceral tumors, histiocytic disorders of childhood, developmental pulmonary abnormalities, post-transplant tumors to community and university-based physicians. The scope of this service encompasses the following:

Pediatric Neoplasias

  • Neuroblastic tumors
  • Wilms tumor and other renal malignancies
  • Rhabdomyosarcoma and other soft tissue tumors
  • Ewing sarcoma/PNET family of tumors
  • Melanocytic neoplasms
  • Other recently described and rare malignancies
  • Langerhans cell proliferations and other histiocytoses

Disorders of Sex Development

  • Gonadal dysgenesis/intersex disorders
  • Testicular anomalies

Pediatric Malformations

Metabolic Diseases

  • Liver storage diseases

Infectious Disease

  • EBV and other related viral pathology

Pathology of Pediatric Transplantation

  • Heart
  • Liver
  • Small intestine

  • Pancreas
  • Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD)

A completed Pediatric Pathology Consultation Request Form must be included with each specimen. (Click on the link to download the form in .pdf format.) When available, a copy of the referring pathologist's surgical report as well as past patient medical and surgical history, laboratory results, radiologic images, electron micrographs, etc., should also be submitted. All tissue blocks will be returned. Microscopic slides will be retained unless the referring physician requests their return.

Mechanism of Billing

Our aim is to make the service as "user-friendly" as possible. We will primarily seek payment from the institution requesting our services; however, should the submitting physician make alternative billing requests, such as billing the patient or the patient's insurance company, our best efforts will be made to accommodate these requests.
